Hospital directory

China Hospitals for International Patients

Browse 34 leading public hospitals in 9 Chinese cities that Horcare helps international patients access, filtered by city, specialty and credential.

Long waits or limited specialist access at home often lead families here; China's tertiary hospitals can often see patients quickly, depending on the hospital. Horcare is a coordination service, not a medical provider: each hospital makes its own clinical decisions.

Our criteria

How hospitals are selected for this directory

Every hospital listed is a tertiary hospital with documented specialist strength and the ability to receive international patients.

  • A government grade, in almost every case Grade 3A
  • National or regional specialty strength in fields patients ask about most: oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and pediatrics
  • University affiliation and teaching departments
  • An international department or established services for foreign patients

The right hospital depends on the diagnosis, not on how famous the hospital is. That is why the directory has no "top 10" and no paid placements: Horcare has no partner hospitals at present, and none is marked as one.

Understanding Chinese hospital credentials

China grades hospitals by level (1–3) and class (A–C); Grade 3A (三级甲等) is the highest tier. A grade alone does not tell you who is best for a specific condition.

CredentialWhat it tells a patient
Grade 3A hospitalsA large tertiary hospital that receives complex referrals
National medical centerA national designation for depth in one specific specialty
University-affiliatedTeaching departments, multidisciplinary teams and research
International departmentA dedicated unit for foreign patients; pricing is set by the hospital
JCI accreditationA voluntary international quality accreditation held by only a few public hospitals; verify on the JCI directory

Credentials are shown only where publicly verifiable. The same grade can mean different things in different regions.

By specialty

Browse hospitals by specialty

Specialty strength matters most for complex oncology, heart and neurological cases. Some hospitals offer advanced options such as CAR-T therapy (approved products or registered clinical trials only; eligibility is decided by the hospital) and proton therapy.

What to expect in hospitals in China as a foreigner

Most leading Chinese hospitals are large, busy public institutions; international departments and coordinators make them navigable for foreigners.

  • International or VIP departments run separate scheduling from the general outpatient clinics, with prices set by the hospital.
  • Language support varies: some staff speak English, and Horcare provides medical interpreters.
  • Fast diagnostics, high volume. Tests are often completed within days.
  • Inpatient routines differ: family members are often expected to help with daily care.
  • Payment is made directly to the hospital, usually as a deposit at admission. How payment works.

Visa rules depend on nationality and length of stay; confirm with the Chinese embassy or visa center. See our visa guide.

Hospitals in China: frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Start with a free case review.

What is the best hospital in China?

It depends on the condition. A hospital that is strong overall may not have the strongest department for your diagnosis. Horcare does not rank hospitals; we match the condition to departments with relevant experience, and the hospital then decides eligibility.

Are there private hospitals in China?

Yes. Private and international hospitals exist, mainly in large cities, and often focus on primary care and outpatient services. Most complex specialist care in China is concentrated in large public tertiary hospitals, many of them Grade 3A.

What are hospitals like in China for foreigners?

Leading public hospitals are large and busy, with fast diagnostics and high patient volumes. International departments offer separate scheduling and some English-speaking staff; family members are often expected to help during an inpatient stay. A coordinator and medical interpreter make the system navigable.

What is a Grade 3A hospital in China?

China grades hospitals by level (1 to 3) and by class within each level (A to C). Grade 3A (三级甲等) is the highest tier: large tertiary hospitals that receive complex referrals and usually teach and run research. A grade describes the whole hospital, not every department.

Do Chinese hospitals have English-speaking doctors?

Some doctors speak English, especially in international departments, but it varies by hospital and department. Horcare provides medical interpreters for consultations, admission and discharge, so you never have to rely on chance.

How do I pay a hospital in China, and does Horcare add a markup?

You pay the hospital directly, usually as a deposit at admission and a settlement at discharge, against itemized hospital invoices. Horcare adds no markup; its own service fee is quoted in writing before any paid work.

Not sure which hospital fits the diagnosis?

Send us the condition and any reports. A coordinator replies personally within 24 hours with hospitals and departments that fit.
