Why patients consider China for oncology

Oncology is the specialty international patients ask Horcare about most often. China's leading cancer care is concentrated in dedicated cancer hospitals and the oncology departments of large Grade 3A teaching hospitals in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

For a family facing a cancer diagnosis, the practical questions are usually the same: how quickly a specialist can review the case, whether the right sub-specialist team is available, and what the treatment will realistically cost. Horcare's role is to get the reports in front of the right department, organize the hospital's own review and quote, and coordinate the logistics so the patient can focus on treatment.

Treatment decisions, eligibility and the treatment plan are always made by the treating hospital's oncologists after they review the medical records.

China's strengths in oncology

  • Dedicated cancer hospitals. China has large single-specialty cancer hospitals, such as the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center in Guangzhou.
  • Multidisciplinary review. Complex cases are commonly discussed by surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists together (MDT review).
  • Particle therapy. Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center offers both proton and carbon-ion radiotherapy for selected tumors; eligibility is decided by the center.
  • Regional expertise. Some cancers that are relatively common in southern China, such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, are treated in high volumes at Guangzhou cancer centers.

Can international patients get cancer treatment in China?

Yes. Leading public cancer hospitals and Grade 3A hospitals in China accept international patients, usually through an international or VIP department. Acceptance depends on the hospital reviewing your records first. Horcare coordinates that review, the appointment and the logistics.

How quickly can a cancer specialist in China review my case?

Horcare sends a personal reply within 24 hours and an initial assessment within 72 hours of receiving your reports. The hospital then sets its own appointment dates; for many cases this is a matter of days or weeks rather than months, but timing is never guaranteed.

Is proton or heavy ion therapy available in China?

Yes, at a small number of particle therapy centers, including Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center. Particle therapy suits only selected tumor types and stages, so the center decides eligibility after reviewing imaging and pathology.

Who do I pay for treatment, and does Horcare add a markup?

You pay the hospital directly for all medical care, based on the hospital's own itemized quote. Horcare adds no markup to hospital bills. Our coordination fee is separate and is quoted in writing before any paid work begins; the initial case review is free.

Not sure which hospital fits your diagnosis?

Send your reports for a free, no-obligation review. A coordinator replies personally within 24 hours; the hospital confirms treatment and quotes its own fees.
