Hospitals by type
Grade 3A (三级甲等) is the highest tier in China's national hospital grading system, given to large tertiary hospitals that meet national standards for clinical capability, teaching and management.
33 hospitals across 8 cities that Horcare helps international patients access · Last reviewed October 20, 2026
Horcare is a coordination service, not a medical provider. Hospital credentials are public designations, not Horcare endorsements; clinical decisions and eligibility belong to the treating hospital.
China classifies hospitals into three levels by size and role. Level 1 hospitals serve local communities, Level 2 hospitals serve districts, and Level 3 hospitals are large regional referral centers. Within each level, hospitals are graded A, B or C after assessment by health authorities.
A Grade 3A hospital is therefore a large tertiary hospital in the top assessment band. These are the hospitals that receive the most complex referrals, run teaching programs and host specialist departments with high case volumes. Grades are reassessed periodically.
For an international patient, Grade 3A is a useful first filter: it signals scale, a full range of departments, and experience with complex cases.
A Grade 3A rating describes the whole hospital. It does not mean every department is equally strong, and it is not a ranking between Grade 3A hospitals.

Not sure which one fits? Ask about these hospitals in a free case review.
Each credential answers a different question. None of them, on its own, tells you which department is right for your diagnosis.
| Credential | Who grants it | What it signals | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3A | National and provincial health authorities | Large tertiary referral hospital in the top band | That every department is equally strong |
| National medical center | National Health Commission | National lead institution for one specialty | Strength outside that specialty |
| University-affiliated | A medical university | Teaching, research, multidisciplinary teams | Access to any particular trial or treatment |
| International department | The hospital itself | Dedicated services for foreign patients | A separate medical team or the same pricing as general wards |
| JCI accredited | Joint Commission International | An international quality and safety standard | Clinical superiority over national Grade 3A hospitals |
The department and the specialist matter more than a hospital's overall fame. A grade 3a hospital may not be the strongest choice for a given condition.
Horcare matches in order: diagnosis → specialty → departments with relevant experience → the hospital decides eligibility. Start from the specialty index, for example oncology, or advanced options such as CAR-T therapy (approved products or registered trials only; eligibility is decided by the hospital) and proton therapy.

Who coordinates your case? About Horcare.
Grade 3A is the top tier of China's hospital grading system: Level 3 (large tertiary referral hospitals) and class A (the highest assessment band). Most complex specialist care for international patients takes place in Grade 3A hospitals.
No. The grade describes the hospital as a whole. Department strength varies, which is why Horcare matches the diagnosis to a specific department rather than choosing a hospital by its grade or fame.
Yes. Many Grade 3A public hospitals accept international patients as self-paying patients, often through an international department. The hospital decides eligibility after reviewing medical records.
Horcare does not rank hospitals. Matching is specialty-first: the right department for your diagnosis matters more than a hospital's credential or fame, and the hospital decides eligibility. A free case review gives you options for your case.
JCI accreditation is a voluntary international quality standard from Joint Commission International. A few Chinese hospitals hold it, while most leading public hospitals rely on the national Grade 3A system. Neither tells you which department is best for your condition.
