Is CAR-T therapy in China right for you?

CAR-T cell therapy is a personalized immunotherapy in which the patient's own T cells are collected, engineered to recognize cancer cells, and infused back. In China it is available as products approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) — currently for specific B-cell lymphomas, B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and multiple myeloma indications — or within registered clinical trials.

It is generally considered for patients whose blood cancer has relapsed or not responded to earlier lines of treatment. Whether a patient is eligible depends on the diagnosis, previous treatments, current disease status and overall health, and is decided by the hospital's hematology team. Horcare coordinates access only to approved products or registered trials.

Final eligibility is decided by the treating hospital after reviewing your records.

What the hospital will usually need to review

  • Your most recent specialist letter or discharge summary
  • Imaging reports, plus the original image files where possible
  • Pathology or biopsy reports, if any
  • Treatment history and dates
  • Current medications and allergies

Any language is fine; translation is arranged during the review.

Why patients consider China for CAR-T therapy

  • Approved products. The NMPA has approved several CAR-T products for specific B-cell lymphomas, leukemia and multiple myeloma indications.
  • Clinical research activity. China runs a large number of registered cell-therapy trials; trial participation always depends on the trial's own criteria.
  • Large hematology departments. Major Grade 3A hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Wuhan run hematology departments experienced in transplant-level supportive care.

Waiting times vary by hospital and are confirmed during the case review. Horcare matches by department strength for the condition, not by how famous a hospital is.

Step by step

Your CAR-T therapy journey

Coordination steps are handled by Horcare; clinical steps are run entirely by the hospital.

How long you'll stay

Often 6–10 weeks near the hospital in total; the hospital confirms the schedule. The hospital confirms the timeline after its review.

Plan for a companion, accommodation near the hospital and interpreter support. Visa rules change: confirm with the Chinese embassy or visa center.

  1. 01

    Free case review

You send recent reports and imaging. Horcare replies personally within 24 hours and gives an initial assessment of suitable hospitals and departments within 72 hours.

  2. 02

    Hematology eligibility review

Hospital hematologists review pathology, prior treatment lines and recent test results to judge whether an approved product or an open registered trial fits.

  3. 03

    Visa and travel

Horcare coordinates the hospital documents needed for your visa application, airport pickup and accommodation near the hospital. Confirm visa requirements with the Chinese embassy or visa center.

  4. 04

    Work-up and cell collection

On arrival, tests confirm fitness for treatment and T cells are collected by apheresis. Manufacturing then takes several weeks, sometimes with bridging therapy.

  5. 05

    Infusion and monitoring

After conditioning chemotherapy the cells are infused, followed by close in-hospital and nearby monitoring for side effects such as cytokine release syndrome.

  6. 06

    Return home and follow-up

You leave with translated discharge records. Horcare coordinates remote follow-up with the treating doctor and any return visits.

For reference, United States: the 2025 US list price (wholesale acquisition cost) of the CAR-T product alone was $503,580 for axicabtagene ciloleucel (Yescarta) and $593,533 for tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah), according to Pulice and Schulman, Health Management, Policy and Innovation, 2026. Hospital and monitoring costs come on top.

These figures are product list prices, not the total cost of treatment, and products and approved indications differ between countries. Eligibility is decided by the treating hospital, and the hospital's written quote is the figure that applies to you.

What a hospital estimate usually covers

  • Pre-treatment tests and work-up
  • The procedure, product or treatment course
  • The hospital stay and ward type
  • Medicines during the stay

What can change the final bill

  • Additional tests the doctors request
  • Complications or a longer stay
  • International department versus general ward pricing
  • A revised plan, always re-quoted by the hospital first

The case review is free, hospital bills are paid directly to the hospital with no markup, and Horcare's service fee is quoted in writing before any paid work. How payment works.
